Purdue Pharma has been caught making false claims about the safety of its opioid drug products. The founder, Richard Sackler, aggressively marketed OxyContin to grow the market. Doctors were paid. Misrepresentations were made claiming a low risk of addiction. Purdue Pharma’s hardline marketing caused many patients to become opioid dependent. Unfortunately, the increased prescription of Purdue Pharma drugs also disproportionately impacted Veterans and active duty servicemembers.
Injuries from Iraq and Afghanistan, including amputations, burns, broken bones, shrapnel wounds, spinal cord injuries, nerve damage, and paralysis were heavily treated with Purdue drugs—OxyContin, MS Contin and Dilaudid. Studies have shown that veterans face after-service issues including physical and emotional trauma and pain that puts them at higher risk of opioid dependence and overdose.
