The Kellogg Company announced a voluntary recall on boxes of Honey Smacks cereal due to a possible health risk associated with possible salmonella contamination.
The CDC and FDA warned Kellogg that their product is likely linked the salmonella contamination of 73 people in 31 states, which includes 24 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported so far.
Per the FDA, the recalled products were sold in the United States and also in the following countries:
- Caribbean;
- Costa Rica;
- Guam;
- Guatemala;
- Mexico;
- Saipan; and
- Tahiti

Symptoms of salmonella
The FDA says most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and the illness usually lasts four to seven days — and most people recover without treatment.
The illness can cause serious and fatal infections in children, elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, according to the FDA.
The Kellogg Company said it is investigating a third-party manufacturer that produces the cereal. The FDA is also inspecting that facility to collect additional information.
