ACUTE LIVER FAILURE FROM IRWIN NATURAL’S GREEN TEA FAT METABOLIZER

By July 13, 2017January 16th, 2024No Comments

Reports of acute liver failure, hepatitis and other liver injuries have started to surface from individuals using a weight loss supplement called “Green Tea Fat Metabolizer.” Although the product is marketed as containing green tea, it actually contains green tea extract with enormous levels of a chemical called EGCG. Although EGCG is an antioxidant when ingested at natural levels in green tea beverages, the levels present in this product present extraordinarily high risk of liver injury. According to LiverTox, a website maintained by the premier expert panel in the world on causation of liver injuries (DILIN: the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network) in collaboration with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, EGCG is known to cause acute liver injury.

In 2003, France and Spain banned another dietary supplement containing green tea extract called Exolise after 13 cases of acute liver injury. In 2009, FDA issued a warning to consumers that led to the recall of a line of dietary supplements bearing the Hydroxycut name after several dozen reports of acute liver injuries. The products contained green tea extract (EGCG). A recent article noted over 90 case reports of acute liver injury from use of green tea products in the medical literature.

Green Tea Fat Metabolizer is made and sold by Irwin Naturals, a Los Angeles-based dietary supplement company. In 2011, Irwin settled a lawsuit brought by the Orange County District Attorney for unfair business practices in connection with the marketing of Green Tea Fat Metabolizer and other products, some of which contained over ten times (10) the legal limit of lead.
