Have you or your loved one had a MIRENA IUD implanted only to develop one of these severe complications?
- MIRENA IUD device migrated or moved from its original position
- MIRENA IUD device imbedded in the uterus or other nearby organs
- Surgery was required to remove your MIRENA IUD
- MIRENA IUD punctured the uterus or nearby organs
- Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus)
- Thrombosis (blood clots)
- Complications from MIRENA IUD have led to infertility / sterility
MIRENA IUD (levonorgestrel-releasing inautrine system) is manufactured by BAYER HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. (the manufacturer of a number of popular birth control products including Yaz, Ocella and Beyaz). MIRENA combines the technology of a traditional IUD with the additional ability to continuously dispense hormones directly into the uterus for up to 5 years.
The complications associated with migration of the Mirena IUD may occur at any time after the device has been implanted. Migration can cause serious damage to the reproductive organs, bowels and other organs, scarring, adhesions, infections, blockages and perforations as well as unplanned pregnancies. Surgery is the only method of retrieving a “lost” IUD and often the physical damage caused by the migration results in removal of the uterus or other organs.
In December 2009 the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer regarding misrepresentations to consumers regarding the safety and effectiveness of Mirena citing the advertising program “overstates the efficacy of Mirena, presents unsubstantiated claims, minimizes risks of using Mirena, and includes false or misleading presentations regarding Mirena.” (Guidance Compliance Regulatory Information/Enforcement Activities by FDA / Warning Letters and Notice of Violation Letters to Pharmaceutical Companies)
