More than 100 different metal-on-metal hip implant systems all suffer from the same dangerous and defective metal-on-metal design

On July 27 & 28, 2012 the FDA Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee met in Washington D.C.  The 18-member panel recommended guidelines for monitoring more than 500,000 people in the US who currently have metal on metal hip replacements from any manufacturer, including long-term follow-up studies.  The panel found studies have shown there is little reason to take the risk posed by metal on metal devices, given the relative safety of alternative non-metal devices.  In addition the panel noted that metal debris from hip replacements present toxic risk for device recipients.  The panel noted more than 17,000 reported injuries caused by metal on metal hips, with an overall failure rate in excess of 10 percent after 5 years.

Note – certain hip stems, including the recalled Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II modular stems may exhibit the same Metallosis problems as metal on metal bearing surfaces no matter what bearing components may be attached to these stems.
